The deposit return scheme will go ahead in August for Scotland!

It was confirmed yesterday, Tuesday 14th February, that the deposit return scheme will be launched on the 16th of August 2023 in Scotland. We consider this decision to be a positive one to maintain the momentum needed to reach targeted recycling levels, whilst ultimately helping to build a circular economy and create a cleaner environment that is free from litter.

The deposit return scheme is designed to boost recycling via a 20p deposit on single-use drinks bottles and cans and despite concerns from some producers, they have until the 28th of February to register for the scheme.

The scheme, run by Circularity Scotland, will be the first UK nation to introduce the scheme. It will then be followed by the UK government scheme launching in 2025 in collaboration with the Welsh Government and the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs in Northern Ireland.

“It is understandable that businesses are feeling nervous about the change and the possible wider impact on their business, but this legislation has been on the horizon for many years, and we have been encouraging businesses we work with to prepare as early as possible. These schemes are proven to be hugely successful. Climate change isn’t something that can just wait and we need to be pushing hard to reduce the negative impact we are having on the planet – and that includes the resources we use and where they end up”.
